About this course

Financial planners help people manage their financial affairs and plan their futures, and financial planning is about much more than planning for retirement, as it is important for people at all stages of their lives. Financial Planning is a demanding and fulfilling profession that requires a deep understanding of Finance, relevant sections of the law, high ethical standards and excellent people skills. Additionally, demand for financial planners is high. From 1 January 2019, every person entering the profession of financial planning must have complete a degree approved by FASEA, the government regulator. Curtin’s Finance and Financial Planning double major is the only approved degree in Western Australia, and was one of the first programs in Australia to get this approval. The requirements for the education of financial planners require broad and deep coverage of a wide range of areas. Curtin’s Finance and Financial Planning double major will cover key bodies of knowledge identified by FASEA in considerable depth. The Finance major will give students the broad knowledge of investments required to provide financial advice. The Financial Planning major extends this, particularly through its unit in Behavioural Economics and Finance. An innovation of Curtin’s program is that the capstone to the Financial Planning major will be an internship with a practitioner. The WA Chapter of the Financial Planning Association will work with Curtin to facilitate 120 hours for each of our students with one of their members.
