Build your professional expertise as you develop your understanding of client relationships and service coordination. Develop core skills that are integral to the interpersonal helping process, especially as they apply to rehabilitation and behaviour change. Explore and develop skills in different counselling models and techniques, such as motivational interviewing.

Explore a diverse range of workplaces and cultures. You'll learn how to support individuals and communities through physical injuries, psychological conditions, disability or disadvantage - helping them to reach their full potential and reintegrate into work and the community.

Learn how to practise ethically and get hands-on experience through a practical work placement in a specialist rehabilitation facility, other rehabilitation-related health facility, or human service agency. You'll build your skills and experience, develop your professional networks and prepare for employment.

You'll graduate prepared to work in rehabilitation counselling, as well as broader counselling settings related to areas such as wellbeing, sport, and mental health.

You'll learn:

  • Rehabilitation counselling
    • Understand the interpersonal helping process, especially as it applies to rehabilitation and behaviour change. Explore different counselling models and techniques, such as motivational interviewing.
  • Service coordination and case management
    • Explore the basic concepts underpinning care coordination in community settings. Examine models of service coordination and case management.
  • Vocational rehabilitation
    • Support people to recover from injury and illness, and help them reintegrate into the workplace and/or other meaningful roles within the community. You'll also learn how to support employers as they rehabilitate their employees.

The qualification awarded on graduation is recognised in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as Level 8 - Graduate Diploma.

To qualify for the award of Graduate Diploma in Rehabilitation Counselling, students must complete a total of 120 credit points across 1 year.

Year 1 requires the completion of 120 credit points including:

  • 105 credit points from chosen Core
  • 15 credit points from chosen Core choice

  • Rehabilitation counsellor
    • Support people who are experiencing physical injuries, psychological conditions, disability or disadvantage through the counselling process, to reintegrate into meaningful life roles (e.g. work and/or in the wider community).
  • Counsellor
    • Work with individuals who are experiencing personal difficulties and help them to make meaningful and helpful changes geared toward promotion of wellbeing in their lives.
  • Student wellbeing coordinator
    • Provide welfare support, through the counselling process and coordinate development and wellbeing programs for students.

 

Professional recognition

The Graduate Diploma in Rehabilitation Counselling is accredited by the Australian Society of Rehabilitation Counsellors (ASORC). Graduates of the Graduate Diploma in Rehabilitation Counselling may apply for membership with ASORC.
