The Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Science is designed to produce graduates with a well-developed knowledge and broad range of skills across the different disciplines of science and economics. Graduates will be able to adapt to change and future challenges to contribute to the commercial and social wellbeing of your community. You will have the ability to apply evidence-based decision making, problem solving and critical analysis through authentic learning activities and communication with diverse audiences.

The Bachelor of Business and Bachelor of Science offers you a range of flexible study options, including full-time and part-time study, as well as delivery in on-campus, blended and off-campus modes.

You have options to focus your study in one or more scientific and economics disciplines, and learn the methods to apply your skills and knowledge to the practical needs of industry, business and government in both scientific and non-scientific roles.

In choosing a Bachelor of Business and Bachelor of Science you can:

  • Build a degree that is tailored specifically to your own needs: select your majors and minor subjects from 17 different disciplinary areas in the BSc component and 3 disciplinary areas in the BEc component.
  • Learn through hands-on practical experience including laboratory work, field trips, field-based units, work integrated learning and research projects.
  • Enjoy being mentored by highly qualified staff, many of whom are national and world leaders in their field.

From 2018 onwards, our new curriculum offers you more flexibility and choice in how your degree is structured, real-world learning embedded in every course, and a choice of two Honours pathways.

Entry requirements

Candidates for the degree of Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Science:

Domestic Students

You will need to meet at least one of the General Entrance Requirements of the University, and the following course-specific entry requirements:

If you are a Year 12 school leaver an ATAR score of 65 or higher (or see alternative entry pathways below).

If you are a non-school leaver an equivalent ranking calculated by your previous qualifications and work experience.

International Students

If you are an international student you will need to meet the Admission Requirements for International Students.

International students must provide one of the following: UTASAccess Level 6 with a minimum overall score of 60% and no individual skill below 55%; or an IELTS score with an overall Band of 6 and no band less than 5.5; or a TOEFL (iBT) overall score of 72 (no individual skill must be lower than: Reading 10; Listening 9; Speaking 16; and, Writing 19) or a PTE Academic overall score of 50 with no score lower than 42, or provide evidence that you have studied for 2 years full-time with English as the sole medium of instruction and examination. These tests must not be more than 24 months old.

For the Bachelor of Economics component: you have completed General Mathematics TQA 3 (MTG315115) or an equivalent pre-tertiary or higher level mathematics subject. Applicants who do not have the mathematics prerequisite and who wish to enrol in the Bachelor of Economics should contact the TSBE Academic Administration Office at enquiries@business.utas.edu.au concerning a pathway into this degree. Students returning to study either after a long absence or new students who have the mathematics prerequisite but who lack confidence in their quantitative skills should enrol in UPP075 Bridging Maths, XAB090 Transition Maths or BEA109 Introduction to Quantitative Methods or KMA003 Mathematics Foundation Unit, before enrolling in the core Bachelor of Economics units BEA140 Quantitative Methods or BEA142 Quantitative Economic Analysis.

International students who have the mathematics prerequisite but who lack confidence in their quantitative skills and who would like to undertake a mathematics bridging program may only take BEA109 Introduction to Quantitative Methods.

For the Bachelor of Science component: For undergraduates (years 1–4), an ATAR score of 65 or higher is required, and for students who wish to undertake one of the majors below, also successful completion of the following prerequisite units at TQA3 level, or equivalent:
