Certificate
During your studies you will use gaming equipment, including Oculus Quest (VR headset) and Microsoft HoloLens (AR headset) technology, engaging with your peers either online or in person to support each other and use exciting technologies collaboratively. You can choose to do this certificate fully online or use our modern laboratory facilities on the Launceston or Hobart campuses. Choosing face-to-face teaching will provide you with an engaging hands-on experience and the opportunity to gain immediate feedback from teaching staff.
You will develop in-demand technical skills such as C# programming, games design and programming, and creation of WebGL applications. As well as the use of 3D interaction design, you will implement games and interactive software using industry standard technologies, tools (Unity 3D and Blender) and languages (C# and HLSL ).
Launch your career in the multibillion-dollar industries of electronic games and interactive environments by acquiring fundamental skills that enable the development of computer games, virtual reality applications and other forms of interactive software applications.
This Certificate is a pathway into the Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology (BICT) majoring in Games and Creative Technology, with all four units used as credit for core or elective units. You can transition into any major within the BICT to take your studies to the next level.

Applicants who have recently completed secondary education (in the past two years)
This course does not use ATAR as part of the admission process.
To be eligible for an offer, applicants must have completed the Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE) or an equivalent qualification.
Applicants with previous higher education study
To be eligible for an offer, applicants must have completed at least two units of study (equivalent to 25 UTAS credit points) at Associate Degree level or higher at any Australian higher education provider
If an applicant has failed any units, the application may be subject to further review before an offer is made.
Applicants with previous VET / TAFE study
To be eligible for an offer, applicants must have completed Certificate III or above.
Applications on the basis of work or life experience
This course accepts applications based on work or life experience.
Applicants who have not completed senior secondary, tertiary or TAFE/VET study, but who have relevant work and life experience can complete a personal competency statement.
Enrolment Restrictions
Students enrolling in this course must complete by the end of 2021. This course will not be offered after this time. Students who have not completed the course by the end of 2021 will be supported to find an alternative course to transfer into.

The Undergraduate Certificate in Gaming and Virtual Reality will give you the skills to collaborate on, analyse, and develop games in the professional workplace or in your own practice. By working with lecturers who run their own tech companies, you will have access to the industry and insights into the booming gaming and virtual reality workforce.
There is currently great demand for employees with skills in the Unity Development Environment and games programming in general. The Digital Australia report states that 91% of households in 2019 own a video game device with two thirds of the population playing games regularly. Even the older generation are using video games for health, in particular for dementia.
As a graduate of the Undergraduate Certificate in Gaming and Virtual Reality, you will have the skills and knowledge to develop modern games and interactive software, especially using virtual reality. You will have a strong skill set to perform as a technical specialist on graduation and strong Unity 3D experience which is used by over 50% of mobile games.
Not only do we provide you with job ready skills, but also the foundation for transition to further study. If you complete the Undergraduate Certificate in Gaming and Virtual Reality and wish to continue further study, you can use the certificate units as credit to enter into the Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology in 2022.
