• There are three main types of scholarships.
  • Merit-based scholarships rely on some combination of grades, professional or extra-curricular achievements to succeed. These make up the majority of business and management scholarships.
  • Need-based scholarships adopt their namesake in only being given to those of greatest need. This is commonly in the form of financial hardship, but can be in reference to coming from a disadvantaged background or having a disability.
  • Research-based scholarships are often discipline-specific endeavours that requires applicants to undergo research in a very particular area. For instance, it may require a student of economics to research an element of the Venezuelan economy and contributors to its inflation.
• Written statements require a short blurb about yourself, with your achievements as supporting evidence rather than being centre stage.
• CVs or resumes put your achievements first in fairly terse language.
• Professional references are former bosses or professors.
• Personal references are family members, friends or community leaders, the latter being preferable.
• Academic transcripts are official or unofficial documents provided by your university. When an application asks for these if you haven’t yet finished undergrad, an unofficial transcript will normally do just fine.

Without further adieu, here are some great funding opportunities in business and management.

1800Approved Finance Solutions Scholarship Grant - $3,000

This scholarship is for Australian citizens enrolled in an Australian business course of any kind. Applicants must write an 800 - 1,500 word essay on “the role of vehicle financing in the future of the automotive industry”. Curiously enough, this scholarship requires nothing else; they don’t ask for GPA, a CV or prerequisite socio-economic background. Your application is assessed solely on the basis of how creative and relevant your essay is. So, we recommend consistently referring back to the essay topic throughout the body of your work.

UWA MBA (Intensive) International Prestige Scholarship - $77,500

This is a merit-based scholarship for commencing University of Western Australia MBA students. In addition to standard requirements like a CV, prior GPA and professional references, the selection committee is looking for a GMAT score of 680 or higher.

Sometimes, it’s possible to enter an MBA solely on the back of work experience, but for this scholarship a prior bachelor’s degree is required. Applicants are automatically sorted by their GMAT score and interview from highest to lowest. The number of interviewed candidates is arbitrarily decided based on how many eligible candidates there are.

Commerce Alumni Leadership Scholarships - $3,000

This is a merit-based scholarship, requiring a modest credit level GPA (65%, or 5/7). It also requires applicants to have demonstrated involvement and leadership in their communities. If you’re a prospective business student at the University of Melbourne, it’s definitely worth applying for this one.  

Queen’s College Graduate Business and Economics Scholarship - $5,940

This is another scholarship for business students at the University of Melbourne. Simply being enrolled in one of their postgraduate courses and being a resident at Queen’s College are sufficient for eligibility.

There are a few curious elements to the application process in addition to the usual requirements for merit-based scholarships, including:

• The submission of 3 recent passport photos
• Paying a registration fee of $75
• Organising an interview at Queen’s College with the Dean of Studies, Wellbeing or Master. This interview will be of a personal nature, touching on professional ambitions and what you believe life will be like staying at Queen’s College

Quantitative Techniques for Economics and Management Scholarship - $3,000

This is a merit-based scholarship for students of several specific courses at Monash University. These include:

• Master of Actuarial Studies
• Master of Applied Econometrics
• Master of Applied Finance
• Master of Banking and Finance
• Master of Business Economics
• Master of Economics

If you’re already planning to study at Monash, this scholarship is great because you don’t even need to apply. You’ll be assessed for your eligibility the moment you enrol in one of these courses, making it a great thing to keep in mind when considering an institution to study at.

The PostgradAustralia Scholarship - $2,750

Our very own scholarship doesn’t discriminate in any way. It doesn’t matter what your nationality is, how high your GPA might be or where you might be from. All we want is for you to describe your passion for your field of study via two things.

• A roughly 500 words written statement
• A creative social media post. This can be anything; a picture, video, haiku or whatever you see fit.

The ease of accessibility makes this highly worthwhile.

CharterNet R&D Scholarship - $10,000 pa + work experience at CharterNet

This is a great opportunity for students at Western Sydney University to bolster their resume while also getting funded. Successful applicants get the chance to work 30 hours per week as an R&D intern, followed by agreeing to work 37.5 hours a week as a full time employee for 12 months after graduation. This is a superb way to start your career because it takes away all the stress of scrambling for a graduate position.

Eligible applicants must be Australian citizens who’ve achieved a passing GPA throughout prior study (4/7), which is very reasonable. It’s simply a matter of accessing WSU’s student portal to apply.
