Entry Requirements

Domestic applicants

Domestic applicants who have recently completed secondary education

To be eligible for an offer, you must have an ATAR of 40 or above. This is the minimum ATAR needed for your application to be considered. Applicants are ranked by ATAR and offers made based on the number of places available.

Applicants who have recently completed senior secondary studies but have not received an ATAR may still be eligible for admission. We will consider your study plan and subject results on a case-by-case basis when we assess your application.

The lowest ATAR to receive an offer in 2019 is not available, as this is a new course for 2020.

Domestic applicants with higher education study. To be eligible for an offer, you must have:

  • Completed a course at Associate Degree level or higher at any Australian higher education provider (or an equivalent overseas qualification); or
  • Completed at least two units of study (equivalent to 25 UTAS credit points) of a course at Associate Degree level (or an equivalent overseas qualification). If you have failed any units your application may be subject to further review before an offer is made; or
  • Completed the UTAS Diploma of University Studies; or
  • Competed the UTAS University Preparation Program, or an equivalent enabling program offered by another Australian university.

Domestic applicants with VET / TAFE study

To be eligible for an offer, you must have completed:

  • A Certificate III (or equivalent) in a related field; or
  • A Certificate IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma (or an equivalent qualification) in any field.

Domestic applicants with work and life experience

If you have not successfully completed senior secondary, tertiary or TAFE/VET study, but have relevant work and life experience you can complete a personal competency statement. If you apply based on your previous work and life experience and your application is not successful, we will work with you to find an alternative pathway into your chosen course of study.

This course does not use ATAR as part of the assessment process.

To be eligible for an offer, domestic applicants from all educational backgrounds must:

  • Meet the University's General Entry Requirements based on your prior studies and experience; and
  • If applying from within Tasmania, successfully complete an audition and interview in person on-campus in Hobart; or
  • If applying from interstate, successfully complete an audition by submitting a private internet link, USB, CD or DVD of your audition repertoire in lieu of a live audition in Hobart, and interview over the phone/internet.

We recommend pre-tertiary TASC subjects in music at the senior secondary level or equivalent, but this is not a prerequisite for admission. AMEB qualification of Grade 7 (performance) and Grade 5 (theory) may be advantageous in some specialisations, but not a prerequisite for admission.

Entry Requirements

Candidates for the degree of Bachelor of Arts with Professional Honours (Specialisation):

  • must have qualified for admission to the degree of Bachelor of Arts, or another approved Bachelor degree, in this University or another approved tertiary institution;
  • if a candidate from another approved tertiary institution, must have qualified for admission to a fourth year honours course in the proposed discipline of study or a cognate discipline;
  • are required by the College of Arts, Law and Education to have a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 5.0 or better in the Intermediate and Advanced level units forming a major in that discipline. Currently, the GPA is calculated on the basis of a HD=7, DN=6, CR=5, PP=4, without any failure in the units that makes up that GPA, for the units at Intermediate and Advanced level in the proposed discipline or otherwise approved by the program director;
  • should consult the following schedule for full details of discipline offerings as some disciplines prescribe additional units and a standard in the major higher than the College minimum GPA for entry to their honours program.

Exemptions regarding entry requirements may be made at the discretion of the Head of the relevant School in consultation with the Honours Coordinator and the Discipline Head.

Domestic Applicants

Domestic Applicants who have recently completed secondary education

Applicants are ranked by ATAR and offers made based on the number of places available. In 2020, the lowest ATAR to receive an offer into this course was 50.65. The lowest ATAR to receive an offer may change from year to year based on the number of applications we receive.

Applicants who have recently completed senior secondary studies but have not received an ATAR may still be eligible for admission. We will consider your individual subject results on a case-by-case basis when we assess your application.

Applicants for the Theatre and Performance major who have not met the ATAR requirement may be asked to undertake an audition or interview in order to be admitted to the course.

Bachelor (Honours)

The Bachelor of Music with Honours degree is a 1-year (minimum) full-time course, offering specialisations in Performance, Creative Practice and Musicology The degree is for highly gifted musicians who seek to continue musical studies beyond the undergraduate level.
Entry Requirements

Entry to the Honours program in Music is by formal application. Candidates are expected to have a good academic record, and to have satisfied minimum criteria by either:

  • successful completion of an undergraduate Music degree with high achievement in the area of specialisation or;
  • demonstrating equivalent professional attainment.

Application requirements

Applicants are required to attend an audition and interview. Overseas or interstate applicants may submit a certified DVD, CD or private internet link of a recorded recent performance or portfolio materials.

Instrumental and vocal applicants should prepare a program of approximately 15 minutes duration, comprising three works of contrasting style. Composition, songwriter, commercial music creation and music technology applicants should present a portfolio of at least three works, including quality recordings of the best performances or realisations of their work.

When do auditions occur?

For Semester 1 (February) entry:
First round occurs between mid-November through mid-December.
Second round occurs between late-January through mid-February.

For Semester 2 (July) entry:
First (and only) round occurs throughout May.
