Data Scientist became a career occupation when companies worldwide determined a need for people skilled in organising massive amounts of data - people with expertise more significant than traditional data mining and programming skills. Organisations today want professionals with business acumen, analytic and programming skills, database capabilities, statistical and mathematical skills, storytelling, data visualisation and machine learning skills.

Entry requirements

To satisfy the entrance requirements for admission to either of the Bachelor's Degree courses, applicants must provide evidence of the following:

  • General entry requirements
    • Completion of Year 12 (Australia), achieving a minimum Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) score of 70 (*an adjustment factor is applied to regional and disadvantaged students); or
    • Successful completion of an equivalent secondary qualification either interstate or overseas and attainment of the equivalent of the Australian entrance standard; or
    • Satisfactory completion of an accredited Tertiary Preparation Program or a Foundation Year Program offered by an Australian university that would enable students to gain entry to an Australian university; or
    • Satisfactory completion of one year of accredited full-time study at a registered institute of higher education at AQF level 5 or above; or
    • Admission to candidature for an undergraduate degree at an Australian university.
  • Additional entry requirements
    • Achieve a Year 12 (Australia) letter grade of C or higher in Mathematics Methods or the equivalent; or
    • Successful completion of the unit of study MAT101 Introduction to Mathematics.

*Adjustment Factor: Regional and disadvantaged students, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, applying through the ATAR pathway will be awarded five bonus points to their ATAR score (similar to other Western Australian Higher Education providers).

  • Foundation Studies
    • Successfully completed Foundation Studies at a recognised Higher Education Institution.
  • VET Qualifications
    • Successful completion of a Diploma (AQF Level 5) or higher in Information and Communication Technology
  • Minimum English Proficiency
    • Applicants from countries where English is not a first language and who have not completed secondary schooling in Australia need to provide evidence of English proficiency in one of the following ways:
      • IELTS (International English Language Testing System):
        Minimum of 6.0 in Academic Test and no band less than 5.5
      • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language):
        64 (Internet-based) test and a minimum of 17 in all sections
        550 (Paper-based) with Test of Written English 5
      • Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic)
        57 (no band less than 50)
      • Cambridge English:
        180 with a score of no less than 180 in each component.

  • Analyse, report and manage data, metadata and derived information using appropriate storage, access, analysis, reporting and administration tools.
  • Be proficient in the use of data collection techniques, quantitative modelling and data visualisation methods on various types of data from a range of fields.
  • Continue learning and maintain a currency of knowledge as the field of computing continues to develop and innovate
  • Apply organisational and business knowledge to applications in the ICT field.
  • Evaluate risk and security issues associated with data storage, access and manipulation.
  • Use the SFIA Foundation Skills Framework for the Information Age
