About this scholarship

Overview

Each year the University may award up to two scholarships known as the Northrop Grumman, ViaSat & Optus Country Scholarship for Burgmann College ("the scholarship") to prospective students.

The scholarship provides an opportunity to prospective students to:

  • improve access to tertiary education for students from rural and regional areas;
  • enhance the skills of rural and regional students in the Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) fields; and
  • enable rural and regional students to be part of the residential community at Burgmann College.

Eligibility

The scholarship is available each year to a prospective ANU student and who:

  • is an Australian citizen, New Zealand citizen, holder of an Australian Permanent Resident visa or a permanent humanitarian visa;
  • is intending to relocate to Canberra to take up a place in a degree program at The Australian National University;
  • is from a regional or rural background and able to demonstrate financial need;
  • is intending to enrol in an undergraduate degree program in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics within the College of Engineering & Computer Science; College of Medicine, Biology & Environment and/or College of Physical & Mathematical Sciences;
  • has applied, and intends to take up an offer of residence at Burgmann College for the duration of the scholarship;
  • is aged 20 years of age or younger at the time of application;
  • has completed their Year 12 or equivalent qualification and achieved an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank 85 or above (excludes bonus points).

Benefits

The duration of the scholarship will be three years. The scholarship is paid in two instalments at the beginning of each semester directly to Burgmann College unless otherwise stated in the letter of offer.

This scholarship will provide a contribution to the accommodation fees payable for residence at Burgmann College for their first academic year and subsequent years. The scholarship is awarded for three consecutive years of residence and study.

The application shall also consist of a:

  1. Supporting Statement - by the scholar of no more than 500 words which addresses commitment and level of investment to their chosen field of study and how the scholarship would enable them to take advantage of their studies to enable them to reach their full potential.
  2. Character Reference - provided by the School principal or teacher, or by another appropriate representative. The character reference should include notes on the resilience, commitment and ethics of the applicant.

The Supporting Statement and Character Reference shall be submitted to ANU Access and Inclusion via email access.inclusion@anu.edu.au prior to scholarship closing date.
