About this scholarship

Overview

Are you a student who hasn't let tough personal challenges stand in your way?

The Sharpe & Abel Scholarship was set up to help students with drive and commitment to overcome adversity and pursue their goals, whether personal or professional.

Sharpe & Abel is a law and strategy firm, founded by ANU alumna Melissa Kirby (BA(Asian Studies) '96, LLB (Hons) '99, GDLP '99) on the principle that the companies that make (and do) things that matter in the world deserve to have justice on their side. Sharpe & Abel's corporate philosophy is based on values of competence, love, trust, freedom, and security. The Sharpe & Abel scholarship is dedicated to supporting and encouraging students with great potential to achieve their goals and make a positive impact on the world.

This scholarship is offered by the ANU College of Law and the ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science.

Eligibility

Applicants must be a current ANU student enrolled in a program of study leading to the award of the Bachelor of Laws (Honours) or Juris Doctor; or an undergraduate program in the ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science. Both domestic and international students are eligible. Applicants should be able to demonstrate strong academic achievement or potential; show commitment to a clear and specific goal (or goals); and explain how receiving the scholarship would support the achievement of these goals. Preference will be given to students who have experienced adversity or disadvantage.

Selection

Selection is made on the basis of:

  • the application letter and how well it demonstrates
    • the student's commitment to a clear, specific goal or goals;
    • how the scholarship will support them to achieve these goals; and
    • how it outlines the adversity or disadvantage they have worked, or are working, to overcome.
  • the student's academic transcript.

Your application letter will remain confidential to the panel.

Benefits

The value of the Scholarship shall be set out in the letter of offer and may vary, but will not be less than $5,000 per annum.

The Scholarship may be made available to part-time students in which case it will be paid on a pro-rata basis.  The Scholarship payments will be made in two equal instalments at the beginning of each semester.

The Scholarship will be payable in any year of the scholar's undergraduate study. The Scholarship will be awarded for one year of the scholar's study at ANU.

Scholarship recipients may be invited to undertake an internship at Sharpe & Abel at a time suitable to the scholar and the firm, however there is no obligation to take up this invitation.
