This is qualification is for those wanting to undertake driving roles within the transport
and logistics industry.
It involves a defined range of skilled operations, usually within a range of broader related activities involving known routines, methods, and procedures, with some discretion and judgement in selecting equipment, services, or contingency measures and within known time constraints.

You will gain the skills and knowledge to work safely as a heavy haulage truck driver in the road transport industry.
Participants will obtain one of the following licenses:
  • Heavy Rigid
  • Heavy Combination; or
  • Multi Combination class vehicle

You may also apply for a forklift (LF) licence.

Subject to meeting the Department of Transport (DoT) licensing requirements, participants may apply for either a Heavy Rigid, Heavy Combination or Multi Combination Class Vehicle drivers licence. Participants will also need to meet DoT's eligibility requirements.

Entry requirements
Participants must complete all 17 units of competency including the (1) relevant class licence unit. The participant must meet the required licence authorisation for their selected vehicle class licence as set out below:

Please Note: L Plate and P Plate Licence holders are ineligible for the Heavy Vehicle Driving Skill Set.

  • Heavy Rigid (HR) Class Licence
    HR Licence Unit: TLIC3004 Drive Heavy Rigid Vehicle
    Participants must hold:
    - A Car (C) Class Licence for at least two years, or
    - A Light Rigid (LR) Class Licence for at least one year, or
    - A Medium Rigid (MR) Class Licence for at least one year.




  • Heavy Combination (HC) Class Licence
    HC Licence Unit: TLIC3005 Drive Heavy Combination Vehicle
    Participants must hold:
    - A Car (C) Class Licence for at least three years, and
    - A Medium Rigid (MR) Class Licence for at least one year, or
    - A Heavy Rigid (HR) Class Licence for at least one year.




  • Multi Combination (MC) Class Licence
    MC Licence Unit: TLIC4006 Drive Multi Combination Vehicle
    Participants must hold:
    - A Car (C) Class Licence for at least three years, and
    - A Heavy Rigid (HR) Class Licence for at least one year, or
    - A Heavy Combination (HC) Class Licence for at least one year.




Please note:
Students will be required to for the Department of Transport and Worksafe fees.

Entry requirements

School Leaver Non-School Leaver AQF
OLNA or NAPLAN 9 Band 8 C Grades in Year 10 English and Maths or equivalent Certificate I or Certificate II

Participants will have the option of gaining either a HR, HC and or MC truck licence, depending on their individual circumstances. The participant must meet the required license authorisation for their selected vehicle class license as set out below.

Heavy Rigid (HR) Class Licence

HR Licence Unit: TLIC3004 Drive Heavy Rigid Vehicle
Participants must hold:

  • a Car (C) class licence for at least two years, or
  • a Light Rigid (LR) class licence for at least one year, or
  • a Medium Rigid (MR) class licence for at least one year.

Heavy Combination (HC) Class Licence

HC Licence Unit: TLIC3005 Drive heavy combination vehicle
Participants must hold:

  • a Car (C class) licence for at least three years, and
  • a Medium Rigid (MR class) for at least one year, or
  • a Heavy Rigid (HR) class licence for at least one year.

Multi Combination (MC) Class Licence

MC Licence Unit: TLIC4006 Drive multi-combination vehicle
Participants must hold:

  • a Car (C) class licence for at least three years, and
  • a Heavy Rigid (HR) class licence for at least one year, or
  • a Heavy Combination (HC) class licence for at least one year.
