About this course

The Bachelor of Midwifery (Graduate Entry) aims to provide Australian Registered Nurses with the theoretical, practical, and research knowledge required to be competent and effective Registered Midwives.

During your course, you will benefit from innovative teaching strategies that meet Australian national standards and integrates extensive practical experience into your learning. The clinical placements will prepare you to keep pace with the complex demands of today's ever-evolving health care industry in the region that you live in. You will progressively develop a woman-centred approach to midwifery practice underpinned by cultural safety, evidence-informed practice, collaborative partnerships, and intra/inter-professional relationships founded in primary health care principles.

The Bachelor of Midwifery (Graduate Entry) course is a two-year program of study, accelerated over 18 months. The Bachelor of Midwifery (Graduate Entry) course is predicated on a total of three years of learning equivalent to a Bachelor course studied over three years. All eligible applicants must hold a Bachelor of Nursing degree and are awarded one year of recognition of prior learning. On successful completion of the course, you will be eligible to apply to the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) for registration as a Registered Midwife.

Designed in consultation with industry, our refreshed curriculum covers topics in pharmacology and the emerging trends in digital health, meeting the new ANMAC education standards.

Entry requirements

COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement The COVID-19 vaccination is mandatory to be eligible to attend a WIL placement for this course. Students will be required to provide evidence of having completed a COVID-19 vaccination schedule by the closing date prior to a WIL placement. The vaccine received must be a vaccine approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) of Australia.

Entry Requirements

To be considered for entry into this course, applicants must demonstrate the following:

  • Current registration with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a Registered Nurse; and
  • A completed Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), or equivalent, Bachelor of Nursing qualification.

It is a course requirement that all students maintain their AHPRA nursing registration for the duration of the course. Students must immediately report any professional investigations into their nursing practice and employment, and/or any restriction or suspension of their AHPRA registration to CQUniversity.

Security RequirementsBachelor of Midwifery (Graduate Entry) students must hold a current and valid registered nursing licence with AHPRA to be considered for entry into the course and ongoing enrolment in the degree. It is a course requirement that all students maintain their AHPRA nursing registration for the duration of the course. Students must immediately report any professional investigations into their nursing practice and employment, and/or any restriction or suspension of their AHPRA registration to CQUniversity.

Mandatory checks documentation must be uploaded to the CQU Placement System 'SONIA' by the closing date. These will then be reviewed by our Work Integrated Learning Team.

Should mandatory checks be outstanding or expired clinical placement is terminated.

Failure to meet the mandatory check requirements by the due date will result in you being unable to attend residential school and ineligible to commence clinical placement, therefore you will need to withdraw from the course.

Students are required to be vaccinated prior to attending clinical placement with the following vaccinations:
  • Hepatitis A, and B
  • Influenza
  • Tuberculosis
  • Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR)
  • Pertussis
  • Varicella

Please note, applicants are strongly encouraged to begin gathering their checks as early as possible.

Assumed Knowledge

Applicants must be registered with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a registered nurse in order to undertake the course. Applicants are also required to have an undergraduate degree for acceptance into the course. Recognition of prior learning will be assessed on a case by case basis.
