Bianca Riordan

Obtaining a Master in Medical Ultrasound will advance my knowledge in obstetrics and in particular, fetal echocardiography.

G'day!

My name is Bianca Riordan and I graduated from CQ University in 2017 with a Bachelor and Post Grad Dip in Medical Sonography. I am now applying to do my Masters in Medical Ultrasound.

I am the first person in my family to finish grade 12 and attend university. I consider myself very lucky - I love being a Sonographer and I get to wake up each morning and go to a job that I love. I am not sure how many people get to say that.

I feel as though I must be a sucker for punishment though because my favourite area of ultrasound in obstetrics and it just so happens to be the hardest and least liked by my colleagues. I am the first to know if someone is having twins, I am the first to know if there is no heartbeat and I am the person that has to make sure there are five fingers and five toes. It is such a challenging career, but there is nothing else I would rather do. I have said that even if I was to win the lotto - I would still work in my field (perhaps part-time haha).

In my current role, I perform all types of ultrasounds - general, vascular, breast, musculoskeletal and obstetrics - with half of my patients being obstetric cases. My ultimate goal is to work in maternal-fetal medicine and scan high-risk obstetrics. This is a very niche field. Obtaining a Master in Medical Ultrasound will advance my knowledge in obstetrics and in particular, fetal echocardiography. It will also demonstrate to my current and future employer the passion I have for obstetric sonography as I will have taken the time and effort to complete my master's. I also owe it to my patient's to have as much knowledge as I can in order to provide them with the exceptional care that they deserve.
