Jaimi Summerton

I thoroughly enjoy the therapeutic component of my current job and see the most benefit to my clients from this.

From a young age, I knew I wanted to work in a field that helped those in need. In 2011 I graduated from year 12 and achieved my first goal of gaining entry into university to study Psychology. Throughout my studies, my passion and interest in psychology have grown further and for the past 5 years, I dedicated my life to finishing my bachelor's degree, honours degree and finally gaining entry into a master's. In order to achieve these goals, I was willing to sacrifice a lot and moved away from my friends, family and job to do so.

I am so honoured and grateful to be accepted into the master's program and know wholeheartedly it is what I want to do. I currently work at Youth Justice where my roles have been as a caseworker and a transitions officer. My job is to support young people in need and in turn reduce offending behaviour. I thoroughly enjoy the therapeutic component of my current job and see the most benefit to my clients from this. Therefore I chose to do a master's to enable career and personal development opportunities where I can work in an environment that focuses solely on mental health and improve my therapeutic skills.

Ultimately I believe a master's will give me the greatest chance of being the best clinician I can be, providing the highest quality service to the community. I have seen in my job a shortage of mental health support for disadvantaged youth in the community. This is an area I am passionate about and look forward to working in on completion of my master's. I hope to one day own a private practice targeting the most disadvantaged population groups and providing outreach services to remote communities.
