Machining for Enthusiasts, Hobbyists and Beginners

If you have always wanted to learn the skills to be able to make your own customised precision metal parts using equipment such as lathes and milling machines for work or play, after hours course will hit the mark! This course will provide participants with practical skills in basic machining on lathes, milling machines and ancillary machines such as pedestal drills and grinders. Participants are welcome to bring in a proposal for their own projects and discuss their suitability with the lecturer. Examples of suitable projects might include metal craft work, hobby train or aeroplane projects. Project exceptions will include vehicle components and weapons. You will be required to wear personal protective clothing at all times in the pratical workshop which include steel capped safety boots, clear safety glasses, coverall style overalls.

The construction, engineering and fabrication industries are some of the largest industries for employment within Australia. The experience you gain from this short course can help you get your foot in the door. When you graduate, you'll have the knowledge and experience to gain an apprenticeship or traineeship in your specific area of interest, for example in: engineering mechanical manufacturing welding/sheet metal. You'll also be prepared for production training programs or entry-level employment in engineering. Example job titles include: metal engineering process worker engineering production process worker machinist welder sheet metal tradesperson storeperson boilermaker engineering assistant.

If what you have learned at work, from other courses, units, from life experience or training provided at work is relevant to this course, you may be entitled to gain unit credits or exemptions.
