About this course

Ever dreamed of working with animals? The Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing will equip students with the skills and knowledge to pursue a career as a Veterinary Nurse.

Students will gain comprehensive training in all aspects of veterinary nursing to help you maintain the health of animals, including imaging, surgery preparation, medical and surgical nursing routines, and clinical pathology.

This course is designed for students who are either:

  • wishing to become a Vet Nurse by learning on campus at Wangaratta (Vic); or
  • currently employed within the industry for at least 15 hours per week either as a trainee or general employee; or
  • university students who are currently enrolled as integrated students in the Bachelor of Veterinary Technology program at Charles Sturt University (CSU).

Undertaking the qualification either on-campus or as part of the Bachelor of Veterinary Technology program will enable students to practice new skills in the workplace, with 240 hours of work placement at a veterinary clinic included over the duration of the course.

Students looking to undertake this course must hold a Certificate II in Animal Studies OR hold a relevant Certificate III or higher level qualification in an animal science discipline OR can demonstrate equivalent skills and knowledge in a relevant animal science discipline to any of the above qualifications.

This course is available as part of the Free TAFE scheme for eligible students.

Training package entry requirements

All applicants:

  • Must hold a Certificate II in Animal Studies OR hold a relevant Certificate III or higher level qualification in an animal science discipline OR can demonstrate equivalent skills and knowledge in a relevant animal science discipline to any of the above qualifications.

GOTAFE entry requirements

Before being accepted into the course applicants:

  • Complete a Basic Key Skills Builder (BKSB) online test to ensure the required literacy & numeracy levels for the course are met.
  • Undertake a Pre-training Review by interview to ensure the course suits their needs and aspirations, and that they are likely to complete the course successfully.
  • All applicants must attend an induction, face to face, via Zoom/Teams or phone.

Workplace-based applicants

Applicants are required to:

  • Have 15 hours of paid employment in an approved Vet Clinic.

Trainees

Need to apply through an Apprenticeship Network Provider with their employer to organise their apprenticeship/traineeship contract prior to applying for this course.

VET TECH

Bachelor of Veterinary Technology students will have their suitability determined by CSU - a minimum ATAR of 70 is required. CSU also requires all students to have Q Fever immunisation.

Technology requirements:

  • Access to a computer with Adobe Reader and Microsoft Word & Teams, as well as a reliable internet connection.
  • Webcam for Microsoft Teams meetings.
  • Headset.
  • A second monitor is a great benefit when studying virtually but not a requirement.

Inherent Requirements

  • Working in this industry may involve shift work and working weekends. It involves handling a variety of animals which requires a reasonable level of fitness and stamina on a daily basis.
  • It is recommended that all successful applicants be immunised against tetanus.
