Entry requirements

As a requirement for this program, Holmesglen requires learners to be engaged in an Appliance Service Apprenticeship. In addition, learners must be at least 18 years of age when enrolling in the program.

Note: For specific units of competency within this program, apprentices are required to possess a TL000 - Trainee Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Licence. This license, granted by the ARC, enables apprentices to work on air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, as well as handle refrigerants during classroom-based training and/or assessments, under supervised conditions at their workplace. The supervisor must hold a license suitable for the tasks they're overseeing.

This license remains valid for the training period, which can extend up to one year. To obtain the license, apprentice learners need to provide the following:

Proof of enrollment in the relevant listed course.
A Work Supervisor Declaration as part of the Refrigerant Handling License application, completed by the designated supervisor.

It is recommended that applicants have completed Year 11 or equivalent and have a minimum of Year 10 English and Mathematics.

Prior to enrolment or commencement of training you will be required to complete a literacy and numeracy assessment and a pre-training interview. These will assist with determining your suitability to the course, verify your training plan, and identify any learning support needs.

What you will learn

The apprenticeship program is a 4-year program. The program is offered as day release, where apprentices are employed full-time in industry and attend on-campus training for 1 day per week on an ongoing basis, and includes online study. The training is typically scheduled over approximately the first 3 years, and the final 4th year is spent fully on the job, with the trainer or assessor maintaining regular contact and support and, where required, attending off-the-job training.

The training provides the background knowledge and skills required for successful work in the appliance service industry.

As an electrical appliance service technician, you will have the skills required to monitor and service systems, diagnose problems with equipment, run tests on machines, and carry out repairs, installations, replacements, and service different systems, appliances, and equipment in the domestic market and on some commercial equipment.
