If you have a passion for the great outdoors, the Diploma of Outdoor Leadership, coupled with the Certificate III in Tourism is perfect for you! Your studies will take you on location as you explore Australian bushlands and coastal, alpine, desert and mountainous environments. This program is available only for the February 2024 intake.
Prior to enrolment or commencement of training you will be required to complete a literacy and numeracy assessment and a pre-training interview. These will assist with determining your suitability to the course, verify your training plan, and identify any learning support needs.
Applicants are also required to commit to off-campus field excursions (which may be overnight) throughout the year.
Holmesglen requires students to be aged 18 by February of the year they start the course. Students should also have the physical capacity to work in the field, where they may be required to assist with outdoor leadership equipment, while complying with all Manual Handling WHS legislation. A Working with Children Check is required due to the practical placement component of the course.
Applicants should have:
a desire to further progress their outdoor leadership skills and knowledge
a Certificate III or IV in Outdoor Leadership (or equivalent experience or qualifications)
experience and interest in the outdoors and nature
a mature attitude and approach to study
the ability to be flexible and show initiative
a desire to work with young people in a range of difficult and dynamic environments.
There are prerequisite studies for one of the units of competency within the program. Students are required to complete or have attained SISOCHC003 Lead challenge course sessions, high elements, before commencing and completing SISOCHC004 Set up and supervise challenge course sessions, high elements.

You will focus on developing the capabilities required to plan, organise and deliver an outdoor adventure program for a wide range of clientele, using a variety of outdoor activities. You will develop camp and expedition management skills including group leadership and campsite catering, allowing you to guide and teach others.
The course is ideal for those that are currently working or who have an interest in outdoor recreation and adventure activities, and anyone who is enthusiastic about outdoor activities like hiking, rock climbing, camping, white water rafting, challenge high rope courses and canoeing. As part of the course, students are required to complete several vocational, practical experiences in the outdoor recreation/adventure tourism industry.
You may be able to reduce the number of units to be studied in your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training. AQF qualifications and statements of attainment issued by another registered training organisation will be recognised by Holmesglen.
