This Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Foundation course is ideal for 16-19 year olds looking to develop work, literacy and numeracy skills, as well as personal development and industry-specific skills.
Students must be at least 16 years of age.
Students are required to attend an interview with a parent or carer to determine their suitability for the course. Students must be 16-19 years old and have additional learning support needs.
Students entering the course are typically transitioning from school. They come from a range of settings including:
Pathways into course -
* public secondary colleges
* private schools
* Catholic schools
* specialist schools
* community education settings.
Some students may have been home schooled or have not been attending school prior to enrolment in the course.
To be eligible for the course, students need to show evidence of an additional learning need e.g. psychometric assessment, evidence of receiving learning support at school, evidence of attending a specialist school, referral from a psychologist or education provider.
If you need support with your learning and/or social skills and previously received help from a teacher's aide in class, Holmesglen's VCAL Foundation with Additional Support can continue that assistance model for you.
You will take part in practical studies and complete projects based on real-world situations. Your classes will be adapted to suit your interests, abilities and strengths.
The VCAL Foundation curriculum promotes the principles and practice of Australian democracy, including a commitment to elected government; the rule of law; equal rights for all before the law; freedom of religion; freedom of speech and association; and the values of openness and tolerance.
You will study in groups of 10 or 11.
The course includes two weeks of structured workplace learning and a two-night camp.
As this is not a vocationally specific course, future job roles are varied. Some students are employed in open employment, others work in supported workplaces. Students seeking employment are referred to Disability Employment Services on completion of the course. Students typically undertake entry level positions in industries such as:
* hospitality
* horticulture
* retail
* building trades
* business services
* community services
You may be able to shorten the length of your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training.
