About this course

This combined degree requires the completion of 600 credit points over five years of full-time (or equivalent part-time) study. Students are also able to fast track their studies in the Master of Teaching (Secondary) to finish the combined program in 4. 5 years. Students complete a Bachelor of Arts degree in specific teaching disciplines and gain a secondary teaching qualification. The course provides the opportunity for students to engage in some teaching practice in schools while developing their knowledge in the Humanities and Social Sciences disciplines. As part of the Arts degree, students must take two arts disciplines offered by Humanities and Social Sciences, and which are available to be taken as teaching methods in the Master of Teaching (Secondary) at La Trobe (see Discipline Areas listed below). Students intending to take a Languages Other Than English (LOTE) method will be required to complete the third-year advanced level of their chosen language. The first year of the degree consists of the foundation arts subjects. In the final two years, students will undertake the more intensive teacher-training component of the degree, including studies in educational philosophy, curriculum, and theory, teaching practice in schools and the two teaching methods subjects. During the Master of Teaching (Secondary) component of the degree students will be taught through a blend of online distance learning and 15 days of on-campus, face-to-face classes in three, five-day blocks. To build experience in the classroom, students will undertake a total of 60 days of supervised teaching practice. This course is accredited against national standards by the Victorian Institute of Teaching.
