About this course

This degree aims to equip students with knowledge and skills that are relevant to a range of law-related vocational contexts including research and policy development, criminology and criminal justice, legal education, human rights and social justice, advocacy, community development and social welfare. The degree offers a unique interdisciplinary perspective on law and legal issues by combining subjects in legal studies and criminology, with electives drawn from other disciplines taught in the University, especially the Humanities and Social Sciences. Core subjects at first, second and third year levels provide the framework for understanding and assessing the relationship between law and society, the nature and function of legal institutions, and the role of law in relation to social change and social justice. The vocational aspect of the degree is underscored by specially designed subjects including the foundation skills based, Law in Action (LST1LIA) and Legal Studies Workplace Practice (LST3LSW ), which provides an intensive overview of vocational practices and pathways for graduates in legal studies. In their third year, students also gain practical experience by undertaking the work placement subject, Legal Studies Workplace Competence (LST3LWC). By selecting from a wide range of electives students are able to tailor their study to reflect their personal and vocational interests. All subjects are worth 15 credit points unless otherwise stated. Please note: LTU0AIM is a not-for-credit subject that students are required to complete at the commencement of their first semester. The subject is designed to enhance students' knowledge and awareness of issues concerning academic integrity.
