About this course

This course prepares you to teach disadvantaged students in Australia and overseas. You’ll learn how to teach in environments where quality education is needed most, learning how to work with at-risk students, express different ways of thinking through the arts, incorporate effective social work practice into your teaching, and communicate in different learning environments. These specialist skills will be supported by studies in contemporary education theory and practice, including classroom management and student development. You’ll also learn how to teach literacy, be trained to manage student welfare, and specialise in a Secondary teaching area of your choice from the range of english, maths, science, English as an Additional  (EAL) or drama. You'll undertake a minimum of 80 days of teaching placements in schools and other educational facilities during the four years of your degree. The course is designed to prepare you for roles such as student wellbeing teachers in disadvantaged schools, with a focus on increasing student participation and retention rates.  Graduates will be qualified to teach in primary and secondary schools and to work in outreach and community facilities such as drug rehabilitation programs, youth detention facilities and council outreach programs for disengaged youth. Applicants must satisfy normal university entry, including Units 1 and 2 – two units of general mathematics or mathematical methods (either) or Units 3 and 4 mathematics (any) and Units 3 and 4 – a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or 25 in any other English. Special entry provision for NONYR12 is available.
