About this course

This course gives you the practical experience and theoretical knowledge you need for a career in primary teaching, including studies in classroom management and child development. You also have the option to select subjects that enable you to teach at a secondary level up to Year 10. The course addresses the current primary AUSVELS curriculum and includes an emphasis on the teaching of literacy and numeracy in the first three-years of the degree. The course also includes a disciplinary sub-major. You may choose a discipline relevant to middle years teaching and then undertake a secondary teaching method in that discipline.  You are required to undertake a minimum of 80 days of teaching placements in schools during the four years of your degree. Applicants must satisfy the University's normal entrance requirements, including VCE Units 1 and 2 - two units of general mathematics or mathematical methods (either) or Units 3 and 4 mathematics (any) and Units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or 25 in any other English. Special entry provision for NONYR12 is available. The Victorian Department of Education and Training requires a satisfactory criminal record check for all teacher education students undertaking practicum requirements in Victorian Department of Education and Training schools. It is expected that equivalent requirements will exist for all other Victorian schools. Before starting the course, you will be required to complete a Working with Children Check application.  You must provide a certified copy of your valid Working with Children card before starting teaching placements. Confirmation of a criminal record may jeopardise your ability to gain access to a suitable, or any, practicum placement(s) and may therefore delay or prevent completion of the course. The three Essentials - Global Citizenship, Innovation and Entrepreneurship and Sustainability Thinking - are specialist areas designed to give you an edge with employers. They will enable you to adapt your knowledge and skills to new contexts in a rapidly changing world.
