About this course

Working with families caring for someone with a disability, illness or other longer-term condition is both rewarding and challenging. This includes children and adults living with disabilities such as intellectual disability, acquired brain injuries, progressive neurological conditions and medical conditions requiring high levels of care. While each family and each care situation is different, there are common family needs. By looking after the family, we maximize positive outcomes for the individual as well as family members.

In this course, you will be introduced to helpful frameworks for understanding and responding to the needs of families of living with disability including the Family Tasks Model which attends to grief mixed with trauma, reconstructing identity, growing through adversity, restructuring roles and responsibilities, creating new meaning. You will have an opportunity to develop skills in family inclusive conversations to better meet individual and family needs
