La Trobe's Master of Internet of Things (IoT) combines technical knowledge with practical learning to give you advanced programming and systems design skills.

Build the skills you need to succeed in a more connected future by studying the key components of IoT, including platforms, protocols and protection.

The first of its kind in Australia, La Trobe's Master of IoT is grounded in industry practice. You'll have the opportunity to work on one of Bendigo's many IoT technology projects like Clever Weather or the Long Range IoT Network.

Or, if you're dreaming of a research career, you can undertake an industry-based thesis in your final year.

Either way, during your degree you'll have access to La Trobe's state-of-the-art artificial intelligence and IoT research lab. Developed in collaboration with Microsoft and CISCO, it's one of the largest of its kind in Victoria.

You'll learn:

  • IoT cloud data
    • Discover how cloud data can be used as tool for brainstorming and informed decision making.
  • Industry impact of IoT technology
    • Learn how IoT can be used to improve and innovate sectors like healthcare, construction and mining.
  • IoT programming and systems design
    • Work with IoT technology first-hand and produce a prototype IoT solution or system for a real-world industry partner.
  • Security protocols and privacy risks
    • Gain an understanding of IoT security and privacy risks by analysing the design of secure hardware and software.

The qualification awarded on graduation is recognised in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as Level 9 - Masters Degree.

To qualify for the award of Master of Internet of Things, students must complete a total of 240 credit points across 2 years.

Year 1 requires the completion of 120 credit points including:

  • 75 credit points from chosen Core
  • 15 credit points from chosen Core choice
  • 30 credit points from chosen Core choice- Specialisation

Year 2 requires the completion of 120 credit points including:

  • 60 credit points from chosen Core
  • 30 credit points from chosen Core choice- Specialisation
  • 30 credit points from chosen Core choice- Pathway

  • IoT system engineer
    • Develop, manage and monitor IoT devices and systems, including cloud/edge servers and sensors. Write software to communicate with devices.
  • IoT architect
    • Spearhead development of the IoT vision. Design end-to-end IoT architecture, enable the design and construction of IoT solutions, and create new processes.
  • IoT business analyst
    • Work within businesses to ensure IoT projects are delivered on time and to high standards. Develop business processes to optimise the ongoing functioning of IoT technology.
  • Industrial UI/UX designer
    • Make IoT technology easy to use. Create software and features that make it easy to navigate and use devices.
