If you are currently working in the health services setting and want to expand your career into senior health management roles and to develop comprehensive skills in the theory and practice of both public health and health services management, the Master of Public Health and Master of Health Administration is designed for you.

La Trobe University's Master of Public Health and Master of Health Administration will prepare you for future health services management roles that deal with the needs of the ageing population, integration of healthcare delivery systems, technological innovations and an increasingly complex regulatory environment. The program will provide you with the opportunity to undertake a research or practice based project enabling you to apply your skills and knowledge to real world problems.

The qualification awarded on graduation is recognised in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as Level 9.

Sample course structure

To qualify for the award of Master of Public Health and Master of Health Administration, students must complete a total of 300 credit points across 2 years.

Upon completion of 60 credit points of subjects students have the option to exit with a Graduate Certificate in Public Health (HCPHE) or the Graduate Certificate in Health Services Management (HCHSM).
Upon completion of 120 credit points of subjects, students have the option to exit with a Graduate Diploma in Public Health (HGPHE) or the Graduate Diploma in Health Services Management (HGHSMG).
Please refer to the course structures for each exit award to identify the subjects that are required to be completed in order to qualify for that award.

Year 1 requires the completion of 120 credit points including:

  • 120 credit points from chosen Core

Year 2 requires the completion of 180 credit points including:

  • 75 credit points from chosen Core
  • 60 credit points from chosen Core choice - Specialisation
  • 45 credit points from chosen Electives

Professional recognition

The Master of Health Administration is accredited by the Australasian College of Health Service Management (ACHSM). Membership may require an application to the professional body and may have additional or ongoing requirements beyond the completion of the degree. Please contact the relevant professional body for details. Depending on subject choice, the Master of Health Administration is recognised by the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators (RACMA) as providing the theoretical underpinning to the experiential components of the Fellowship Training Program in medical administration.
