About this course

This workshop introduces and explores concepts and techniques of the narrative approach to working with clients who have experienced trauma. You will have the opportunity to practice these approaches in a supportive environment. Prior knowledge of Narrative Therapy is recommended but not required.

What you will learn

On completion of this course, you will be able to describe and begin to apply the narrative therapy techniques of:

  • 'double listening' i.e. simultaneously listening for both the effects of trauma and the client's responses to trauma;
  • 'externalising' the effects of trauma;
  • eliciting and highlighting people's responses to trauma;
  • building the person's preferred story with their responses;
  • using their responses to restore from the trauma's effects their sense of self and identity.
