The electrotechnology industry is experiencing job growth, particularly in the construction, building and maintenance fields, providing plenty of opportunities for qualified electricians. This course provides you with the framework to start your electrical apprenticeship.

In particular, this course provides training in basic electrical theory, electrical workshop practices, wiring and basic installation skills, the use of hand and power tools and an overview of the electrotechnology industry, and the range of occupations within.

Course outcomes

This pre-vocational course is mainly aimed at school leavers or new entrants into the workforce. It provides the opportunity for those wishing to gain employment in the electrotechnology industry with the required prerequisite knowledge to gain access to a wide range of apprenticeships offered within the industry.

Assessment

You will be assessed through written and oral questioning, observation of practical tasks and project work.

Entry requirements

As a general guide to entry, learners will be best equipped to achieve the course outcome if they have a minimum level of literacy and numeracy skills equivalent to the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) Level 3. It would be advantageous if you have completed Year 11 with some studies in maths and science.

With a booming building trade comes plenty of opportunities for qualified electricians, particularly in the construction, building and maintenance fields. These areas lead to an exciting career in the electrical trades as an electrician, electrical fitter, electrical machine repairer, renewable energy installer, refrigeration mechanic and instrument technician.

Credit for prior study or work

You can seek Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) where your work experience or qualifications of an advanced and related nature have been undertaken. RPL is individually assessed based on evidence submitted by the student to the teaching department. Applications for RPL will be assessed by relevant Melbourne Polytechnic trainers, academics and where appropriate, industry experts.
