Develop hands-on and practical skills

When you study Melbourne Polytechnic's Diploma of Jewellery and Object Design, you will learn from industry-based jewellery professionals. Gain skills in designing and crafting jewellery and 3D objects with an emphasis on current trends. You will study jewellery-making techniques and materials, practise wax casting, perform ring manufacturing and develop skills in surface embellishment, stone setting and silversmithing. Study areas include design and research, drawing and rendering, CAD (Computer Aided Design) for jewellery and small business studies to prepare you for industry. Melbourne Polytechnic has one of the only courses in Victoria that focuses on technical jewellery design and construction. Our industry partners include Northcity4, Gold and Silversmiths Guild of Australia, Craft Victoria and The Jewellers Association of Australia (JAA). We also have connections with contemporary jewellery galleries in Melbourne, such as e.g.etal, Studio Ingot, Pieces of Eight, Black Finch, Small Space Gallery, in.cub8r and Metal Couture.

Set your career in stone

Graduates of Melbourne Polytechnic's Diploma of Jewellery and Object Design are encouraged to pursue their own studio practice producing both limited edition production ranges and client-based commissions. You may find employment in the manufacturing or retail jewellery sector assisting with simple repairs, sales and client consultation.

You can seek Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) where your work experience or qualifications of an advanced and related nature have been undertaken. RPL is individually assessed based on evidence submitted by the student to the teaching department. Applications for RPL will be assessed by relevant Melbourne Polytechnic trainers, academics and where appropriate, industry experts.
