What you will learn

We offer one of the few specialised property courses in Australia. Property economics at QUT is concerned with all aspects of property with a focus on finance, the commercial property market sector, sustainable development, and environmental and energy efficiency. You'll gain hands-on, practical experience to supplement your theoretical knowledge.

The Data Science component of your studies covers the theory and the practical tools for data acquisition, storage, management, processing, analysis and visualisation. Ethical considerations, communication, collaboration and critical thinking skills are all given detailed coverage.

Your course progression has been carefully crafted to cater for the diversity of specialist mathematics skills, to scaffold your development in coding - particularly in data science relevant languages - and to prepare you for a rewarding career in data science.

Your studies will culminate with the Data Science Capstone Project, where you'll work on an extensive project with an industry partner to synthesise your learned skills and techniques to solve more complex authentic problems, which will build your preparedness to enter the workforce.

Data science is an ever-changing landscape and at the completion of this course, you'll be able to move with it having developed a set of fundamental tools and techniques to lead in transforming industry.

Combining property economics and data science offers diverse and exciting career opportunities.

As a graduate, you will be an agile problem-solver, capable of tackling real-world problems by applying the insights gained from extracting knowledge from data. Your comprehensive knowledge of data science tools and techniques will be employed to design new solutions that drive progress and innovation, guided at all times by your appreciation of the ethical considerations concerning the use of data in decision-making.

You'll be highly knowledgeable and experienced in selecting from, and applying, appropriate statistical, computational and modelling techniques including scalable approaches to big data, and working with complex or unstructured data.

You'll be equally as skilled in property valuation, property management, asset and funds management, and be able to provide strategic advice in the real estate, banking and finance sectors.

You may work in private enterprise or as an employee of property development, valuation, property management, professional services investment or property finance companies. You may also work in government departments and local authorities concerned with rating, compulsory acquisitions, property development or property and portfolio management. Your work will usually combine a mix of office and field work.

You will be more than capable of effectively communicating your data-driven insights to broader audiences, expert and non-expert alike. You will be experienced at interacting effectively within teams, working independently, and in appraising your own continuing professional development.

The Property Economics degree meets the education requirements for professional accreditation and membership of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS); the Australian Property Institute (API) - Certified Practising Valuers (CPV), Certified Development Practioner (CDP), Certified Property Manager (CPM), and Certified Property Practitioner (CPP); the Valuers Registration Board of Queensland; and the Board of Valuers, Appraisers, Estate Agents and Property Managers (BOVAEP), Malaysia.
