Entry requirements

Entry requirements 2.0 year program

You must have a recognised bachelor degree (or higher qualification) in any discipline.

1.5 year program

You must have one of the following:

  • A recognised bachelor degree (or higher qualification) in health business or law; or
  • A recognised bachelor degree (or higher qualification) in any other discipline plus at least 3 years full-time (or equivalent) professional experience working in health middle management (or higher).
1 year program

You must have completed QUT's Graduate Diploma in Health Management within the last 7 years.

0.5 year program

You must have completed QUT's Graduate Diploma in Health Management within the last 7 years plus one of the following:

  • A recognised bachelor degree (or higher qualification) in health business or law; or
  • A recognised bachelor degree (or higher qualification) in any other discipline plus at least 3 years full-time (or equivalent) professional experience working in health middle management (or higher).
2 year program

A completed recognised bachelor degree (or higher)

with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 4 (on QUT's 7 point scale)
in any discipline.

1.5 year program

A completed recognised bachelor degree (or higher award):

  • in health business or law with a minimum grade point average of 4.0 (on QUT's 7 point scale); or
  • in any other discipline with a minimum grade point average of 4.0 (on QUT's 7 point scale) and with at least 3 years (full-time or equivalent) experience working in health management at a middle to senior level. Middle to senior level experience is defined as experience in a supervisory or leadership role (e.g. with responsibility for decision making team work quality assurance and/or policy development.

Students applying on the basis of work experience must submit a detailed CV position details and employment statements

You do not need to apply for the 1.5 year program as you will be automatically assessed for eligibility as part of QUT's application for admission process.

This program is ideal for clinicians interested in pursuing a management or executive career in health policy or health care. Health service managers are responsible for the business of health care. Their skills are used to develop strategies to maximise the efficient and effective delivery of health services in a diverse range of health settings.

The Master of Health Management develops students' knowledge across the broad scope of health. This course prepares graduates to provide leadership in a range of health services and programs. Students may choose to complete a specialisation in emergency and disaster management health law health policy and planning quality and patient safety or a cross-specialisation. Note the specialisation is not part of the award title and does not appear on the graduation parchment.

Completion of this qualification may entitle graduates to seek membership of the RACMA subject to additional completion of the College's supervised experience and examination requirements.

Course structure

Students who have been awarded advanced standing and are undertaking the 1.5 year program are required to complete a total of 144 credit points for the award of the degree.

* You must complete six core units and one research methods unit.

* You must also complete a 24 credit point research project 24 credit point internship or 48 credit point dissertation.

* If you wish to undertake a specialisation then you will need to complete two core units from the specialisation and undertake your project or internship in that field.

* You may choose electives from across the program to complete your 144 credit points. 

Students undertaking the 2 year program are required to complete 192 credit points of study.

* You must complete six core units and one research methods unit.

* You must also complete a 24 credit point research project 24 credit point internship or 48 credit point dissertation.

* If you wish to undertake a specialisation then you will need to complete at least two core units from the specialisation and either complete two other units from the choices available or undertake your project or internship in that field.

Students who wish to proceed to a research higher degree (e.g. PhD) should undertake a dissertation.
