You must have a recognised bachelor degree (or higher award) in any discipline.

Additional entry requirements

For the Environmental Health major you must also have the following:

A minimum of 48 credit points (equivalent of one semester full time study) of recognised basic science units completed in a recognised bachelor degree and must include:
- 12 credit points (one subject) of foundation chemistry; and
- 36 credit points in other science areas (e.g. microbiology physics anatomy and physiology life science environmental science).

What you will learn

The Master of Health Safety and Environment aims to equip individuals with the specialised skills and advanced knowledge required for professional practice or research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and environmental management (EM). Graduates will have the capacity to lead and influence the development of high standards of OHS and EM.

Traditionally organisations have employed graduates from various disciplinary areas to fill OHS and EM roles. However there is an increasing trend for companies and government organisations to seek graduates who can occupy both the OHS and EM roles.

Convergence of the OHS and EM roles is common in mining manufacturing and construction industries where the production processes have both on-site and off-site impacts. Government and other industries are starting to follow this trend.

Flexible delivery

You can choose to complete the course on campus or online with our flexible study arrangements and you can choose to study full-time over two years or part-time over four years. Graduates of the QUT Graduate Diploma in OHS or QUT Graduate Diploma in Environmental Health are eligible to complete the masters program in one year full-time. Graduates from other universities with similar graduate diplomas may be eligible to receive advanced standing towards the Master of Health Safety and Environment based on their completed units.

Career pathways

Careers and outcomes

The course is designed to qualify graduates for Health Safety and Environment (HSE) positions in a wide range of industries. Position titles include: HSE Advisor HSE Coordinator HSE Manager HSE Auditor and Sustainability Manager.

You will gain advanced knowledge and skills to successfully undertake HSE advisory or management roles that encompass OHS and EM in a wide range of industries and locations.

Professional recognition

The Occupational Health and Safety major of PU80 is accredited with the Australian OHS Education Accreditation Board (AOHSEAB). The Environmental Health major of PU80 is accredited with Environmental Health Australia (EHA).

Course structure

Students can study flexibly (internal or online) for all core units and most elective units in PU80. Some core units also employ alternate study modes such as intensive workshops which all students are encouraged to attend.
