About this course

The Alternative Tertiary Entry Program provides students an alternative means by which they may gain admission to nominated Swinburne Bachelor degree or UniLink programs, without undertaking VCE units to obtain an ATAR.

The program is run in conjunction with a student's school and cannot be undertaken independently.

Upon completion of the course requirements, students will be guaranteed an offer into a Swinburne course in line with the marks achieved and their broad career goals.

Course structure

Students participating in ATEP undertake units relevant to their academic and broad career interests. Students will enrol in one unit per semester selected from the list of available units. These units are recommended as suitable for first year study and have no pre- or co-requisite requirements. The choice of units is discussed between the student and the school and will reflect the student's developed ability and interests. To qualify for admission to a Swinburne course, students must achieve a VCE study score of at least 25 in Units 3 and 4 English (EAL 30), or for those undertaking the IB Diploma, a score of 4 or higher in any English unit, or a higher score as required by particular Swinburne courses. Other VCE English studies are not accepted. As well as English units at school, students will:

  • complete one Swinburne unit per semester from a prescribed list
  • undertake a year-long transition program, consisting of two tailored units.

If the unit undertaken is a "Core" unit in the degree then you will do an elective in place of the core unit already undertaken through ATEP It is expected that students will spend approximately 12-15 hours per week in out-of-class study in order to fully comprehend each unit.Although this program is specifically designed to be an alternative to the ATAR system, Swinburne recognises that students may have already undertaken, or wish to undertake, other VCE units. Under the ATEP, students may take up to three assessed VCE 3 and 4 units (English plus two others) and still qualify for admission to a Swinburne course under the ATEP system. If the student takes four or more assessed VCE 3 and 4 units, their application to be admitted to a Swinburne course will be on the basis of their ATAR score as required by VTAC. With the agreement of the school, any non-assessed VCE units can be undertaken while still meeting the ATEP requirements. Students undertaking the IB may complete a further three assessed IB subjects. Students who also complete the requirements of the IB and achieve a minimum score of 24 will be awarded the IB diploma. In this event the University is required to use this as the basis for admission into Swinburne courses. The ATEP is used entirely to assess a student's eligibility and capacity to enter Swinburne and the units undertaken as part of the ATEP will not be counted towards their degree course requirements.
