The sector offers diverse employment roles and the work by community service workers is important in supporting people to live safe, inclusive and empowered lives.
To do well in this sector, you will need good communication skills, an ability to show empathy, a willingness to learn new skills and a willingness to work with a diverse range of people.
Organisations in the community service sector provide a wide range of services, supports and programs. Community service sector employers include community organisations, not-for-profits, private organisations and local and state governments. Access to programs and services provided by these organisations can make a huge difference in people's lives.
We offer two focus areas: community and health.
Community focusIn this community focus you will learn how to support a diverse range of individuals by providing a first point of contact. You will also learn how to organise and complete daily work activities, participate in workplace health and safety activities, and how to communicate and work effectively.
You will also learn about the community service sector and the types of organisations and work roles that make up the sector. The sector is a broad one and encompasses areas such as: housing and homelessness, children and family services, domestic violence, emergency relief, crisis and care response, advocacy, counselling, case management, mental health, training and education.
Health focus
The health focus will prepare you to work in a variety of health settings. You will gain the entry-level skills for further study in the health, disability and aged care sectors, and learn about a range of employment pathways, as well as how to develop a resume and portfolio.
You will gain an overview of the health care, aged care and disability sectors, and learn how to support a diverse range of individuals. You will also learn how to organise and complete daily work activities, participate in workplace health and safety activities, and how to communicate and work effectively.
This course is a pathway qualification into the community services or health care sectors, and/or further study to Certificate III in Individual Support.
On successful completion of this course, you will receive a Certificate II in Community Services.
