Progress your career in the Automotive electrical service and repair industry and get the skills you need to service, diagnose and repair electrical systems and components.

This nationally recognised qualification is designed for people who are currently employed in the Automotive Electrical industry and are looking to get formally qualified as an Automotive Technician. To enrol in this course, you must already be employed in the industry either under a contract of training (apprentice or school-based apprentice) or as a non-apprentice and have access to a relevant workplace.

In this course, you will learn how to use and maintain electrical test equipment in an automotive workplace, carry out diagnostic procedures, and apply your knowledge of automotive electrical circuits and wiring systems. You'll gain experience in soldering electrical wiring and circuits, installing vehicle lighting and wiring systems, repairing wiring harnesses and looms, and testing and repairing basic electrical circuits.

You'll also learn how to diagnose and repair spark ignition engine management systems and compression ignition engine management systems, as well as how to test, charge and replace batteries and jump-start vehicles, and install ancillary electronic systems and components.

Throughout the course, our experienced teachers will also teach you how to diagnose and repair charging, starting, ignition and warning systems and instruments, as well as automotive electrical systems and electronic body management systems, and how to apply your knowledge of petrol and diesel engine operations.

This course is designed for people who are currently employed within the Automotive Service and Repair sector. To undertake this course, you must have access to a suitable workplace for the practical components of the course and be supervised at your workplace by an appropriately experienced or qualified trades person who is able to sign-off on the workplace practical tasks.

On successful completion of this course, you will be equipped with the skills you need to service, diagnose and repair electrical systems and components in vehicles in the automotive electrical service and repair industry. You might also like to consider further training in a related course including Light or Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology, Motorcycle Mechanical Technology or Outdoor Power Equipment.

This course is also available as an Australian Apprenticeship.
