About this course

If you enjoy working outdoors and want to develop your existing skills and knowledge at a more advanced level in the Horticulture industry, then this is the qualification for you!

This course is offered as an on-campus program at Alanvale and Clarence and is also available in the workplace for new and existing workers within the horticulture industry. If completing as an apprentice/trainee or workplace based student, your training will consist of a combination of on-the-job training, off-the-job workshops and self-paced study.

This qualification provides a general vocational outcome in amenity horticulture and will allow you to develop your skills in growing plants for recreational or ornamental purposes, and/or establishing and supervising amenity horticulture sites such as botanic or public gardens, historic gardens and landscapes, sports facilities, urban or other public spaces.

In this course you will have the opportunity for lots of hands-on learning and the campus based program provides the chance to put your skills and knowledge into practice through a work placement in the horticultural industry. You'll develop your skills in providing information on plants and their culture, implementing propagation, plant nutrition and plant establishment programs as well as how to prepare growing media. You'll learn how to effectively control weeds, plant pests, diseases and disorders, as well as how to prepare and apply chemicals, and transport, handle and store them appropriately.

You'll also learn how to implement soil improvements for garden and turf areas, assist with landscape construction work, and learn how to operate pressurised irrigation systems, as well as perform specialist amenity pruning.

On successful completion of this course, the horticultural skills you gain at this level will prepare you for work at a supervisory level within this vibrant industry.
