Meet the requirements for gaining a Firearms Licence in Tasmania.

Firearms Safety Courses are conducted to determine the competency of applicants for Firearms Licences, and will assist you to meet the requirements for obtaining a Firearms Licence in Tasmania. Training can be undertaken across firearms categories A, B, C, D and H.

To enrol in this course, you must have written approval from Tasmania Police. You may only enrol in the category of firearms course for which Tasmania Police approval has been given.

The course includes four hours theory in a classroom and four hours practical experience on a Tasmania Police-approved shooting range.

In the classroom, you will learn about the legislation that applies to firearms ownership and use in Tasmania, the different types of firearms and ammunition you may encounter, and the safety rules associated with shooting. You'll also learn about the practical aspects of using firearms safely and your obligations and responsibilities to community safety awareness, including legal and social responsibilities, the circumstances and consequences of firearms misuse, and ethics and assistance.

For the practical part of the course, you will go to a Tasmania Police-approved shooting range where you will learn how to carry firearms safely, how to load and unload different types of firearms, how to safely store and transport your firearms, and how to use different categories of firearms safely.

On successful completion of this course, you will be posted a Statement of Results confirming that you have fulfilled the requirements for training in the particular categories of firearms for which you have applied. Tasmania Police Firearms Services will also be advised so that they can proceed with the next stage to issue you with your Firearms Licence.

Entry requirements

  • Go to Service Tasmania to lodge your application for a Firearms Licence.

  • When Tasmania Police approve the granting of the licence, they will forward you written approval to enrol in a course together with:

    • A list of course dates for you to select from

    • An information sheet about the course

    • TasTAFE enrolment forms

  • Complete these forms including your list of preferred dates for the course and include your payment

    • Payment can be made by credit card, cheque or you can come into a campus and pay in person

  • Post to TasTAFE

  • Upon receipt of your enrolment forms and payment, TasTAFE will send you confirmation of the course date and venue together with study notes and a pre-course examination paper for you to complete before the day of the course.

  • 50 points of identification must be presented on the day of the course.

  • You are ineligible to enrol in a Firearms Course without Tasmania Police approval.
