The course is designed for students who want to progress their career into agricultural management. There are five Majors: (1) Crop Production; (2) Livestock Production; (3) Feedlot Management; (4) Production Horticulture; and (5) Poultry Production.

The course covers the latest technology and production techniques for your industry. You will complete vocational units to develop practical skills in farm management, while deepening your understanding of the science and technology of modern agriculture through the UNE units.

By completing this degree you will be able to apply your technical knowledge and business management skills to improve the sustainability, productivity and profitability of farming systems.

You will need access to a farm enterprise for your selected Major on which to base projects and reports throughout the course. All units are supported by online study guides and you can complete the degree part-time while you work in agriculture.

Further Information

Candidates will be required to enrol with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) in order to complete the Vocational Education Training (VET) units from the Diploma in Agriculture or Diploma in Holistic Management - Sustainable Rural Lands, Business and Communities and the Advanced Diploma in Agriculture contained within the Bachelor of Agrifood Systems program.

Entry requirements

A candidate shall:

(a)
be qualified for admission (see
Admission Undergraduate and Postgraduate (Coursework) Rule

or

(i)
hold a VET Certificate IV or higher qualification in any field;
or

(ii) have completed 4 units from an approved Diploma;
or

(iii) have achieve the required minimum skills profile against the Australian Core Skills Framework;
or

(b) hold an approved Diploma, including the required VET units for the chosen Major, from an Australian TAFE or Registered Training Organisation (RTO) under the Articulation Programs;
or

(c) hold an approved Diploma and Advanced Diploma, including the required VET units for the chosen Major, from an Australian TAFE or Registered Training Organisation (RTO) under the Articulation Programs; or

(d) international students must hold a completed approved Diploma, including the required VET units for the chosen major, from a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) under the Articulation Programs.

What you will learn

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. analyse the profitability and viability of a rural enterprise and assess financing alternatives;
  2. carry out business planning for an agricultural enterprise, based on a knowledge of financial procedures and reports, industry benchmarks and best practices, market requirements for the product and the role of risk management strategies;
  3. evaluate the natural resource base and infrastructure requirements for an agricultural enterprise and incorporate the information into enterprise planning;
  4. apply high level business communication skills (including online networking), reflect on the effectiveness of communication and develop alternative approaches;
  5. research and discuss a range of marketing strategies and develop a marketing plan for an agricultural product to meet customer requirements and enterprise profitability targets;
  6. apply spatial imaging technology to monitor the environmental impacts and improve the management of an agricultural enterprise;
  7. demonstrate the use of techniques for sustainability and production monitoring and analyse the collected data against appropriate benchmarks; and
  8. explain systems theory and risk management principles and integrate these into adaptive decision making.

Career pathways

Graduates from this degree will be able to be employed in farm management, in agricultural supply industries and in service industries such as advisory services and land management.
