About this course

This degree focuses on the relationship between architecture, communication, technology, culture and the environment through theoretical and practical application. An emphasis on current architectural practice in Australia and overseas means you graduate with knowledge of the ever-changing nature of architecture globally. Practical experience is also a focus; you will learn in dedicated design studios and workshops from industry and leading architectural educators.

You will also be given the opportunity to take part in the award-winning Design and Construct student learning experience - the longest running and largest practice-based teaching program of its type in Australia - where you will design and then construct community buildings in remote locations in Australia and overseas.

Some of the projects students have completed include the visitor accommodation at Port Resolution, Tanna Island, Vanuatu; Aboriginal ranger accommodation and research facilities in Fish River, Northern Territory; and accommodation and research facilities at Witchelina Station, South Australia. You will be involved in projects such as these from conception through to completion.

What you will learn

As well as the opportunity to gain practical experience, you will gain the skills needed to design buildings that range in scale and complexity. You will also develop:

  • research and methodological skills to integrate theoretical, behavioural, environmental and ethical issues within architectural practice
  • an understanding of the social and political context of architecture
  • verbal, written and graphic communication skills, including traditional drawing methods and computer-based representation skills and knowledge
  • cognitive and technical skills to demonstrate a broad understanding of knowledge in contemporary design culture

You can gain an extra qualification and broaden your career prospects by completing a Diploma in Languages.

Career pathways

Architects are creative, accurate and problem solvers by nature. They immerse themselves in new technologies and materials, and push the boundaries. A career in architecture is rewarding - you get the opportunity to shape, and even transform, the built environment around you.

Our graduates are also in demand, with UniSA ranked number one in the state for the number of graduates in overall employment1.

Careers to consider:

  • architect: combine creative design with technical knowledge to create sustainable solutions for the built environment
  • heritage consultant: develop sustainable practices in design to protect and maintain heritage projects and sites
  • project manager: involves initiating, planning, executing and controlling a team and their outcomes

This degree does not lead to registration as an architect - to achieve registration you must complete a two-year Master of Architecture degree following successful completion of the Bachelor of Architectural Studies.
