About this course

This double degree gives you the opportunity to study science before undertaking medicine. This pathway allows school leavers who have achieved exceptional results to commence a three-year undergraduate science degree followed by the four-year Doctor of Medicine (MD). With a deeper understanding of the scientific fundamentals that underpin medicine, you will be better prepared for any career in medicine from specialisation to research and teaching. This program is delivered by the Faculty of Science and Sydney Medical School.

Sydney Medical School offers unparalleled opportunities to study medicine in Australia. Our graduates play leading roles in health fields in all corners of the globe. Our world-class research includes programs in diseases which affect millions of lives, such as cancer, obesity, chronic disease and ageing, neurosciences and mental health, infectious diseases, and reproductive, maternal and child health. When you study medicine with us you will have access to world-class teaching hospitals, internationally-acclaimed academics, early patient care and a wide range of placement opportunities across Australia and overseas.

In the Faculty of Science you will be taught by the best and most dedicated scientific thinkers, including members of the Australian Academy of Science, Australian Research Council Fellows and many staff members who have won prestigious prizes such as the Prime Minister's Prizes for Science and Eureka Prizes. You will learn in world-class facilities, including the multi-million-dollar Sydney Nanoscience Hub building and the Charles Perkins Centre for diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease.

As a graduate of the Double Degree Medicine program you will be committed to rational, compassionate healthcare and medical research of the highest quality. Our graduates maintain lifelong, self-directed learning and pursue evidence-based medical practice. They initiate, lead and support advances in clinical medicine, research, education and community service.
