The University of Tasmania predominantly admits year 12 school leavers to its MBBS degree.

To be eligible to apply as a tertiary applicant in 2018 (for 2019 commencement) please note that the sole tertiary entry point for MBBS will be the University of Tasmania Bachelor of Medical Research (53E or M3M). The Bachelor of Medical Research entry point to the MBBS is through the following entry schemes.

Competitive Entry Scheme - Domestic

Bachelor of Medical Research Competitive Entry Scheme allows students studying BMedRes to apply for the MBBS each year if they have:

The pre-requisite entry requirements

  • A competitive UMAT score in the year of application; AND
  • Distinction average (70%) in Year 1 or 2; OR
  • Credit average (65%) by the end of Year 3

Applicants need to complete a full time load (4 units per semester) with no Leaves of Absence (or deferral), no failures and no recognition of prior learning. This is a competitive scheme and entry into MBBS is not guaranteed. The important thing to remember is, if you are interested in this option put the Bachelor of Medical Research (53E) as your second preference when applying for MBBS.

Guaranteed Entry Scheme - Domestic

The 'Guaranteed Entry Scheme' will offer up to 20 school leavers the opportunity to study the Bachelor of Medical Research. This option is something that you cannot apply for. Bachelor of Medical Research Guaranteed Entry Scheme students are selected by the School of Medicine from the applicant group who apply for but are unsuccessful for MBBS. Applicants must have successfully achieved:

  • an ATAR of 90 or higher, all pre-requisite entry requirements
  • a competitive UMAT score, and
  • Successfully completed in 3 year’s full time with a credit average (65%)

Applicants need to complete a full time load (4 units per semester) with no Leaves of Absence (or deferral), no failures and no recognition of prior learning. Students on the BMedRes Guaranteed Entry Scheme who fulfil the requirements will be given guaranteed entry into the MBBS the year after completion of the BMedRes. Selection for this scheme is competitive with applicants ranked on performance. Offers are made by the School of Medicine. Applicants cannot apply for the Guaranteed Entry Scheme. If you are successful for the Guaranteed Entry Scheme, you will be notified in late January or early February of the year that you applied into the MBBS.
