About this course

This program of study is provided for students who intend to embark on a career in the maritime industry as navigating (Deck) Officers and Masters on commercial vessels. It provides the knowledge and skills required to safely manage and operate vessels. Course content includes navigation and vessel handling, cargo and passenger transport, vessel management, marine legislation and shipboard safety. The program is designed to integrate with professional short courses and training at sea so that successful students will not only obtain an Advanced Diploma or Bachelor Degree but also a Certificate of Competency issued by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) . The program is fully compliant with the training and educational requirements of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW Convention, as amended in 2010).

Entry requirements

Pre Sea Deck

Satisfactory completion of:
Australian Year 12 (or equivalent) with a pass in Mathematics Applied (or equivalent)
Australian Year 12 (or equivalent) Physics or Chemistry or a Physical Science subject (Tasmania only).
Australian Year 10 pass in English (or equivalent)
International students require IELTS of 5.5 with a minimum of 5.0 in each band (or equivalent)Watchkeeper DeckCompletion of approved Pre Sea Deck training (or equivalent) including evidence of minimum of 6 months sea-time on vessels greater than or equal to 500GT on company letterhead AND evidence of completion of approved monitored on board training program. (Task and Guided Study workbooks)
International students require IELTS of 5.5 with a minimum of 5.0 in each band (or equivalent)
ORCompletion of Pre Sea Deck training (or equivalent) AND evidence of completion of approved monitored on board training program. (Task and Guided Study workbooks)
OR
Completion of 36 months sea-time as per Marine Order 71.
