About this course

The Bachelor of Science is a three-year degree, in which you will complete 24 subjects, of which some will contribute to your major (your chosen specialisation).

Incredibly flexible, you can choose to begin your specialisation immediately, if you have decided on your major, or in second year after completing foundational subjects in first year. We can help you build the degree that's right for you by providing career advice and guiding you through your study options to ensure you reach your career goals.

Your ecology and conservation biology major is incredibly practical, incorporating field and laboratory studies at all levels, providing extensive opportunities for hands-on learning both within UOW's purpose-built Sciences Teaching Facility, and in the superb environments of the South Coast and inland regions of NSW.

Ecologists and conservation biologists are broadly trained, using the latest scientific knowledge, tools and techniques in both laboratory and outdoor settings to understand problems and develop solutions across the areas of biodiversity, conservation, ecology, evolution, genetics, marine biology, medical research, and molecular biology.

They work across all scales of biology, from molecules within organisms to populations of organisms and the ecosystems they form.

In addition, you will complete an industry-orientated research project tackling real problems, such as assessing creek water quality or weed infestation within the Illawarra, all while developing and showcasing your employability skills.

The specialist conservation biology training will give you the knowledge and skills sought in a wide range of government and industry organisations.

On completion, high-performing students considering further study or a career in research should consider the Bachelor of Science (Honours). This one-year degree offers students a pathway to expand their knowledge in ecology and conservation biology and achieve their research aspirations.
