About this course

Offered exclusively through Victoria University Polytechnic's VET in Schools program, this intermediate course equips you with practical sporting skills and industry knowledge that can be applied to positions including:

  • sports and recreation officer
  • fitness instructor
  • recreation officer
  • sporting coach.

You will learn how to:

  • apply first aid and participate in safe work practices
  • use social media for collaboration and engagement
  • plan sport, fitness and recreation sessions
  • instruct fitness programs
  • educate and facilitate user groups
  • develop and update coaching and officiating knowledge
  • conduct basic warm-up and cool-down programs.

This course can be used as a pathway for entry into the Certificate III in Fitness or Diploma of Sport Development.

What you will learn

To be awarded the SIS30115 Certificate III in Sport and Recreation, a student must successfully complete a total of fifteen (15) units of competency, comprising of:

  • nine (9) core units, and;
  • six (6) elective units, of which:
  • three (3) units must be selected from units listed within the SIS30115 Certificate III in Sport and Recreation qualification;
  • three (3) units may be selected from units listed within the SIS30115 Certificate III in Sport and Recreation qualification,��elsewhere in SIS Training Package, or any other current training package or accredited course.

The selection of electives must be guided by the job outcome sought, local industry requirements and the complexity of skills appropriate to the AQF level of this qualification as well as be approved by the Polytechnic.<

Career pathways

Possible career opportunities emerging from the completion of the Certificate III in Sport and Recreation include:

  • recreation officer
  • activity operation officer
  • sport and recreation attendant
  • community activities officer
  • leisure services officer.

You may also choose to pathway into the Certificate III in Fitness or Diploma of Sport Development.

Credit for prior study or work

You may be able to complete your qualification sooner through formal recognition of your existing skills. This is known as Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

To receive RPL, we assess your previous work, education and life experiences against recognised qualifications. Applications for RPL can be made prior to enrolling.
