About this course

Throughout this course you will develop the skills necessary to work with at-risk youth and families in order to help improve their lives. Learn how to support people with complex trauma and support workers within the broader community sector.

This course will give you the skills to:

  • understand the provision of services and interventions for young people and their families
  • work within a practice framework
  • use effective communication to build relationships
  • work across a range of contexts such as community based organisations, residential services and outreach services
  • work with at-risk youth and families, as well as vulnerable individuals with the aim of improving their lives

You will undertake your training through our multi-award winning blended learning model, ensuing you get hands-on and work-based experience, including work placements.

What you will learn

To be awarded the CHC40313 Certificate IV in Child, Youth and Family Intervention, a student must successfully complete a total of sixteen (16) units of competency, comprising of:

  • ten (10) core units, and;
  • six (6) elective units, of which:
  • at least four (4) units must be selected from the elective units listed in the CHC40313 Certificate IV in Child, Youth and Family Intervention qualification;
  • two (2) units may be selected from any endorsed training package or accredited course relevant to the work outcome.

Where appropriate, electives may be packaged to provide a qualification with a specialisation in residential and out of home care, or family support. Electives must be industry relevant as well as be approved by the Polytechnic.

Specialisations: The Polytechnic currently off the following specialisation(s): - Residential and out of home care, and; - Family support.

  • case support worker
  • residential care worker
  • child protection support worker
  • child/youth support worker
  • family support/prevention worker.

Credit for prior study or work

You may be able to complete your qualification sooner through formal recognition of your existing skills. This is known as Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

To receive RPL, we assess your previous work, education and life experiences against recognised qualifications. Applications for RPL can be made prior to enrolling.
