Llewyn started his working life with a locksmithing apprenticeship which has morphed into digital-focused security and software development over the course of a decade. A natural progression was to build on his career in the Cyber Security industry.
Having commenced Certificate IV in Cyber Security 22603VIC in 2022, Llewyn is looking forward to jumping straight into this adaptation of his career at the end of his studies, 'With recent security breaches across a number of industries, the demand for cyber security qualified staff is at an all-time high and I’m confident that with my IT and locksmithing background, and my new qualifications, I’ll be working in the industry in no time.'
With some of Australia’s largest organisations coming under cyber-attack recently, the spotlight on the industry has never shone brighter and businesses – small, medium and large – are realising that digital integrity for operational, fiscal and client information is paramount.
For those wanting to enter the world of digital security, job prospects and associated salary scale depending on experience is extremely promising. Qualified Cyber Security Analysts can expect to earn on average $100k per annum.
Cyber security threats are real and constant - in 2022, Australian Government career forecasters reported that Digital activity in 2019–20 contributed $317 billion and 527,726 jobs to the Australian economy. Cyber security's direct economic impact in 2019-20 was roughly $15.7 billion in revenue and employed 19,475 people.
This is great news for Llewyn and his classmates of past, present and future. 'Building on my knowledge and upskilling my career has been possible with the fantastic teachers at Melbourne Polytechnic – they understand the academic range of each student and their knowledge around the course subject matter is excellent.' Like most new experiences, it’s often the unexpected element that delivers the best surprise, Llewyn finds that learning the mathematical elements of the course, which he had always been cautious about, rewarding and the teachers made the learning easy.
As part of the cyber security course, students analyse the requirement for cyber security in a business setting, implement network security infrastructure and develop a cyber security-based project. These core subjects along with other critical modules build digital confidence for the cyber security professionals of the future.
