Bachelor (Honours)

The Bachelor of Music with Honours program is designed to allow well qualified graduates in Music or Music/Teaching to extend their studies by pursuing specialist Music research and creative portfolio projects.
Entry Requirements

1. Admission to candidature shall be determined by the Head of School on the recommendation of the course coordinator.

2. Except as provided in Rule 3, a candidate for admission to the honours course shall:

(a) hold an AQF Level 7 Bachelor of Music or Bachelor of Education (Secondary Music) from the University of New England; and

(b) have attained a minimum grade point average of 5.0 (Credit); and

(c) have achieved 18 credit points at Distinction level or better in 300-level units in Music; and

(d) have passed units to the value of at least 60 credit points in Music, except that with the approval of the relevant Head of School, up to 12 credit points in another subject may be substituted; and

(e) have fulfilled any additional requirements prescribed and published by the school or area concerned.

3. With the approval of the Head of School a person who has fulfilled the requirements of an equivalent AQF Level 7 Bachelor qualification of a university or other institution and who meets requirements considered by the school to be equivalent to those specified in Rule 2 (b), (c), (d) and (e) may be admitted to the honours course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Music with Honours.

4. The candidate shall pursue a music topic for which the University can provide adequate supervision.

Sydney Conservatorium of Music
A non-degree course allows you to undertake undergraduate level study, for the purpose of continuing professional development or simply for interest.
Entry Requirements

Music Units of Study are available only to Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and citizens of New Zealand. Participants are expected to complete the assessment work and if successfully completed, will be eligible to receive credit towards a future degree. Applicants may be required to attend an audition.

Admission requirements you'll need to meet for this course.

  • The following course-specific admission requirements are mandatory and must be satisfied by all applicants. These requirements are in addition to or supersede the minimum requirements outlined within the Academic admission requirements band section below.

    All applicants are required to attend an audition. The audition may contain an interview component. Additionally applicants must have completed a Bachelor of Music, with equivalents considered. Alternatively applicants can have completed three years of a four year Bachelor of Music, and are normally expected to have maintained a course Weighted Average Mark of 70 or over, plus marks of 70 or over in all Principal Studies units, and marks of 70 or over in all Music History units.

    All applicants must meet the academic admission requirements for this course. The indicative or guaranteed ATAR is as published (where applicable) or academic admission requirements may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:

    • Bachelor degree in a cognate discipline; or
    • Where accepted, equivalent prior learning, including at least five years relevant professional experience.

    For international students, requirements include your secondary school results.

  • English competency requirements may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:

    • Year 12 English ATAR/English Literature ATAR grade C or better or equivalent;
    • Special Tertiary Admissions Test;*
    • IELTS Academic Overall band minimum score of 6.0 (no individual band less than 6.0);
    • Successfully completed 1.0 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher in the UK, Ireland, USA, NZ or Canada;
    • University Preparation Course;
    • Indigenous University Orientation Course;*
    • Aboriginal University Readiness Assessment;*
    • AQF Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree;
    • Successfully completed 0.375 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent); or
    • Other tests, courses or programs defined on the English Proficiency Bands page.

Doctorate (PhD)

Sydney Conservatorium of Music
The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music may be pursued in composition, creative work in music, ethnomusicology, musicology, music education, and performance studies.
Entry Requirements

To be eligible for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy (Conservatorium), you must have completed the equivalent of one of the following in a subject area related to your proposed research area: bachelor's degree with first class or second class honours or, master's degree by research or, master's degree by coursework with an independent research component such as a thesis, dissertation or research project. These criteria constitute the minimum requirements for eligibility and do not guarantee admission. That remains at the discretion of the relevant supervisors and Dean or Associate Dean, and access to supervision remains highly competitive. The University must certify that there are sufficient supervisory and other resources and facilities available to enable your candidature to be completed successfully.
