Your admission to a Unit or Units of Study at the University of Sydney is subject to approval, which may include the fulfilment of prerequisites in previous study, and availability. Applicants may be required to attend an audition.

Entry Requirements

A candidate shall be qualified for admission (see Admission Undergraduate and Postgraduate (Coursework) Rule and Admission Undergraduate and Postgraduate (Coursework) Procedures); and

(a) shall complete a satisfactory written personal statement assessed by the discipline within six months prior to the date of enrolment; and

(b) shall have on admission to the degree a performing standard equivalent to Grade 6 of the Australian Music Examinations Board demonstrated via audition or music performance qualifications; and

(c) shall have on admission to the degree a music theory standard equivalent to Grade 4 of the Australian Music Examinations Board demonstrated via music performance qualifications or the successful completion of a music theory test set by the Music Discipline Convenor.

OR

Former or current UNE students may transfer into the Bachelor of Music on the basis of previous Music studies completed as part of a University of New England degree where they have:

(a) completed MUSI121 with a Credit grade or higher; and

(b) completed MUSI101 or MUSI110 or MUSI111 with a Credit grade or higher.

Assumed knowledge: any two units of English

    All applicants are required to attend an audition. The audition includes a theory test and an interview. Note: The audition/interview requirement may be waived for current ECU students enrolled in the Diploma of Music, Advanced Diploma of Music, Diploma of Music Industry or Advanced Diploma of Music Industry.

    All applicants must meet the academic admission requirements for this course. The indicative or guaranteed ATAR is as published (where applicable) or academic admission requirements may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:

    • AQF Cert IV;
    • Successfully completed 0.25 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher at an Australian higher education provider (or equivalent);
    • Undergraduate Certificate;
    • Special Tertiary Admissions Test;*
    • University Preparation Course;*
    • Indigenous University Orientation Course;*
    • Aboriginal University Readiness Assessment; or*
    • Experience Based Entry Scheme.*

  • English competency requirements may be satisfied through completion of one of the following:

    • Year 12 English ATAR/English Literature ATAR grade C or better or equivalent;
    • Special Tertiary Admissions Test;*
    • IELTS Academic Overall band minimum score of 6.0 (no individual band less than 6.0);
    • Successfully completed 1.0 EFTSL of study at bachelor level or higher in the UK, Ireland, USA, NZ or Canada;

To be eligible for admission to this Masters program, applicants will require the following:

  • hold a Bachelor of Music or equivalent degree from a recognised University (or another tertiary education institution of equivalent standing) AND
  • successfully undertake an audition and interview and receive a panel recommendation for admission to the Master of Music studies OR
  • submit a folio of creative works for audition and receive a panel recommendation for admission to the Master of Music Studies.

OR

  • hold a Bachelor of Music (Honours) or equivalent degree from a recognised University (or another tertiary education institution of equivalent standing) including completion of a Music research methodology course AND
  • successfully undertake an audition and receive a panel recommendation for admission to the Master of Music Studies OR
  • submit a folio of creative works for audition and receive a panel recommendation for admission to the Master of Music Studies

Students admitted via the above pathway will be eligible for advanced standing to complete an 80 credit point Master of Music Studies. Students applying for the Research pathway must have completed 7011QCM Introduction to Music Research or equivalent before admission to this pathway.

OR

  • hold a Graduate Certificate in Music Studies from Griffith University AND
  • successfully undertake an audition and receive a panel recommendation for admission to the Master of Music Studies OR
  • submit a folio of creative works for audition and receive a panel recommendation for admission to the Master of Music Studies

Students admitted via the above pathway will be eligible for advanced standing to complete an 80 credit point Master of Music Studies. Students applying for the Research pathway must have completed 7011QCM Introduction to Music Research or equivalent before admission to this pathway.

Note: Degrees from overseas institutions must be assessed as equivalent to a recognised Australian AQF level qualification.
