About this course

Gain a competitive edge to employment in this fast-growing industry

If you hold a Diploma of Community Services, Youth Work or Mental Health or, you are already working in these industries, North Metropolitan TAFE is delivering skills and knowledge to help you acquire counselling skills as an additional skill to your core profession.
You'll gain skills needed to work with clients experiencing complex situations, requiring advanced interviewing and communication skills in a community services setting.

The units covered focus on communicating effectively, working within a case management framework, applying core counselling methodologies to assist your clients and establishing and maintaining positive relationships in community services work.
On completion of these additional units, graduates of a Diploma of Community Services will also achieve the Diploma of Counselling.

Training will be delivered through a combination of online and on campus sessions.
The online delivery will be done via Collaborate sessions (on Blackboard), which are live online classes facilitated by a lecturer taking you through the training.
On campus sessions will be run in smaller groups in class where there are practical skills and assessments to be performed.

What you will learn

  • Build and facilitate counselling relationships with clients
  • Reflect on and improve your own professional practice
  • Recognise and respond to crisis situations
  • Research and apply personality and development theories
  • Work legally and ethically

Career pathways

The units from the Diploma of Counselling will assist you in many employment fields with a focus on community services work.

At this level support workers and case workers may provide day-to-day support in community settings and provide assistance with entitlements and benefits under the broad direction of others.
