About this course

In this degree, you'll have the opportunity to take marketing subjects that explore design thinking and its place in modern industry. You'll also apply an ethical lens to industry, with value-based learning that delves into the ethics of marketing and data, inclusion and diversity. This industry-informed degree also allows you to undertake a work placement of up to 12 months, helping you to build both practical skills and industry contacts.

RMIT offers a variety of learning and teaching approaches including lectures, seminars, workshops, presentations, group discussions and project work.

Through RMIT University's online learning portal, myRMIT, you will be able to view online resources and learning activities created by lecturers, access course materials via Blackboard, collaborate with lecturers and fellow students, and access your student email account.

Educational software, the Learning Hub, resources and printers are accessible on campus via the RMIT wireless network using your own laptop, tablet or smart phone or via computer facilities on-campus. Ongoing assessment throughout the semester includes examinations, essays, reports, presentations, group projects, research projects and practical assignments.

Industry experts provide guest lectures to expose you to current marketing practice, and the use of sessional lecturers will allow you to engage with industry practitioners. Some of our industry partners include GlaxoSmithKlein (GSK), Kraft Foods, Queen Victoria Market, and F1 Melbourne.

Underlining RMIT's reputation as a university of technology, design and enterprise, other work-connected and industry-relevant experiences available to you include:

  • working in a student team as part of the Fastrack Innovation Program. In this elective subject, you will work with mentors to develop and present a solution to a real problem using fast-prototyping techniques
  • participating in industry competitions such as the L'Oreal Brandstorm Competition. In 2017 L'Oreal transformed the brand challenge into a talent and project incubator for students to help make their winning proposals become a reality
  • attending our annual marketing careers event which builds employability skills and knowledge and provides a chance for current students to network with industry professionals.

As part of your studies, you will undertake a work placement of up to 12 months.

This course includes core business and marketing subjects, work-integrated learning subjects, flexible subjects, a one year compulsory industry placement, and a business design project. The business design project in final year consolidates this practical experience, theory and your problem-solving skills.

Year 1

You will do 7 of the compulsory common business core subjects, plus 1 marketing major subject.

Year 2

You will study the final compulsory common business core subject, and focus on your major by completing 7 marketing subjects including studies in marketing communication, market research, service quality, applied brand management and digital marketing.

Year 3

The third year involves a compulsory industry placement.

Year 4

After completing your industry placement, you will return for your final year of study. You will complete subjects in your marketing major, flexible subjects, and business design project subjects: capstone subjects that bring together your theoretical learning from the first two years and your supervised work placement.

In the business design project subjects, you'll need to produce a brief that outlines a current or potential business issue. You then reflect on theory, test creative solutions, communicate the issue, and demonstrate your ability to analyse and problem-solve.
