About this course

Learn how to provide information, support and advocacy to assist people in financial difficulty within a social justice framework. You will learn from experienced financial counsellors, therapeutic counsellors, social workers and community lawyers who are experts in their fields.

In this course you will gain the skills and knowledge required to work as a qualified financial counsellor within community services and community legal organisations supporting people in need.

Financial counsellors have an extensive knowledge of areas of law and policy including consumer credit law, debt enforcement practices, the bankruptcy regime, industry hardship policies and government concession frameworks.

Entry requirements

You should have work experience in a job role involving:

  • the self-directed application of knowledge with substantial depth in some areas
  • the exercise of independent judgement and decision-making
  • the application of relevant technical and other skills

On successful completion of this course you will be equipped to provide specialist knowledge and options to manage debt and financial difficulty and work within a model of social justice and client empowerment.

Financial Counsellors are employed in community agencies and are funded largely by either State Governments or the Federal Government. Graduates may be employed in casework, community development, and social justice contexts.

  • problem gambling including online and sports betting

  • payday lending and similar issues.
